Sitting on my own sofa in my own living room may not seem very exciting to you, but I am thrilled to be here. I had a wonderful time having my granddaughter for a visit, driving her home, spending time with her dad and sister, and helping with the birthday party yesterday. I got up at 5:00 this morning -- something I used to do every day but usually don't anymore -- and was on the road before 6:30. I took lots of breaks along the way to stretch and hydrate. I wasn't sure I would drive all the way through, but I have to say it's much less tempting to stop and get a room when the sun is out. I am not particularly fond of driving (something that surprised people because I travel so much) but I'm especially "unfond" of night driving in places I don't know well. It isn't because I'm scared; it's because my lasik surgery fifteen years ago left me with a weird thing called a "halo effect": oncoming headlights turn into starbursts if there isn't a lot of ambient light. Around home, I'm fine. Even on the highway it's not bad as long as there's some separation between lanes (like a wide median). The worst is in a town I haven't been to before with two lanes, always worse with rain.
Anyway, here I sit after being on the road for thirteen hours including stops. I unpacked my car within fifteen minutes of being here and am about to start a load of wash. After my rambling lifestyle of late, this is my idea of excitement. Falling asleep within the next hour will punctuate my evening perfectly.
