Spending time with my kids is always one of my favorite ways to pass time; this weekend it was especially terrific. I've been a little emo with my trip coming up, and I was glad to have two-thirds of my boys here. I had the chance to tell them how much they mean to me, and even though I know they know that, in the unlikely event that something bad should happen to me, my only regret would have been not making sure I told them. They said they do know, and it's mutual, and they understood why it was important to me to say it.
That bit of sentimentality out of the way, we had a great time! This morning my youngest son, his girlfriend, and I went out for a quick shopping trip -- I found a few things that fit much better this time! -- and while we were shopping my middle son called to say he was at my house. We had already decided to do a "wrap bar" for dinner, like a salad bar but with tortillas and fillings and fixin's. Everyone (including me) danced in the kitchen to music that was way too loud, and the kids did all the dinner prep and cooking. I had a chance to (mostly) finish my packing and just relax a few minutes. The house was alive in the way it always was when my boys were young, with lots of noise and laughter, silliness and conversation.
Everyone left a little while ago, all at the same time. Because I'll be gone a while and I had an irrational amount of produce, I told them all to "shop in my fridge." It's pretty empty now, and each son left with a big bag of food. My little dog went home with the middle son and his girlfriend, so after having four extra people and a total of three dogs, the house feels more quiet than usual with just me and my little cat left. I still can't believe that this time tomorrow I'll be over the Atlantic on my way to Belgium then to Marrakech. I'll probably write at the airport tomorrow before I board my international flight. After that, I may just update here and there. I will take lots of pictures to share!
