Brussels at Dawn
I don’t have an internet connection although the Brussels
airport allegedly offers one. I’m able to connect to that network, but not to
the internet. My phone and computer both think the time is 2:16 a.m.; my watch
knows that the actual time is 8:15.
I managed to sleep about an hour on my overnight flight, and
while I’m very excited to be leaving Brussels for Marrakech in a little over an
hour, I’m also very tired. Even in my sleepy state, it was hard not to
appreciate the beauty of the sun rising over Belgium as we landed. It’s cold
(outside) here, but so hot in the airport! I would peel off a layer or two if
it didn’t mean carrying those layers along with me through the airport. I’m at
my gate now, but will probably wander off. After an eight-hour flight, I’m
tired of sitting.
This part of the journey has been the hardest so far,
probably at least in part because I’m sleep-deprived. Some people here speak
English. I thought the official language in Brussels was German, but all the
announcements I’m heard have been in French – not that it matters; I don’t
speak either. The airport is huge and mostly deserted, at least in this
terminal. I didn’t know where to go when I got off the plane, but I managed to
find a coffee shop – there was a Starbucks right at the gate where I deplaned,
but I went to a local(ish) place – and stood at the tall table in the cafĂ©
getting my bearings. Oddly, even though announcements are in French, most of
the signs in the airport are in English.
I’ve already missed my posting deadline for the thirteenth,
so this will have to do. I’ll post as I’m able and keep you updated on my great
adventures!
