A Letter a Day

When was the last time you got something other than bills or junk in your mailbox? For me it was today. My aunt sent me a lovely note, and it got me thinking about how nice it is to get a handwritten letter. For many, letter-writing has become a lost art. It isn't always practical -- and certainly isn't as quick a way to communicate as email -- but there is just something so much more personal about real letters. One of my cousins is having a letter-writing party for her birthday, where all attendees will be penning notes to send to residents of nursing homes (and maybe other such places, I'm not sure). The combination of these two recent reminders of the "kindness of letters" has inspired me to write at least one letter a week. At first (even as I started typing this) I was thinking I'd write one per day, but that seems unrealistic. One per week seems reasonable, and you can probably guess the recipients of the first -- and the second: my little granddaughters. I may include stamped envelopes to make it easier for them to write back. Everyone should know the joy of sending and receiving real mail.
