Overall, I feel pretty confidant in the kitchen. I have a handful of recipes I make for my kids when they come home, and I like to throw perhaps crazy ingredients together to see what happens. Yesterday I made a cheesecake that was mostly a failure; of course, it wasn't so awful I couldn't have a slice. And another one today. I've tried baking cheesecakes in the past, never with great results. The latest one wasn't too bad, but I used some amaretti cookies for the crust and amaretto in the cake itself, so I was especially disappointed it wasn't better. I felt like I wasted some of my favorite treats for something that wasn't a favorite.
Despite yesterday's setback, I was back in the kitchen again today making one thing I was fairly certain would come out well (yeasted cornbread) and one I had no idea about (vegan black bean soup). I made a big mess of my kitchen, and while I haven't tried either, the bread looks and smells amazing and the soup -- which has been in the slow-cooker all day -- seems okay. My son and his girlfriend are coming over, so I thought I would indulge my love of cooking when I have someone to share it with. They don't eat meat, but they aren't purists; I could have used chicken broth (something I always keep on hand) instead of vegetable broth, which I picked up yesterday just for this meal.
Usually I wouldn't serve something I've never made before, but I figured neither menu item could turn out too horrible. They aren't big cooks -- they're busy and eat out a lot -- so I'm sure they'll appreciate it even if it isn't up to my standards. I really like that every time they walk in the door, my son's girlfriend says, "It always smells amazing in here! What are you cooking?" That's one of my favorite compliments.
