Palm Trees and Christmas Decorations

Even though I've lived in Florida for over fifteen years, I just can't get used to warm weather at Christmastime. I'm not complaining! Today the sky is a beautiful shade of blue without one single cloud, and the temperature is in the mid-seventies. The sun is hot; a gentle wind is blowing. This is how I love Florida. (I like the heat too, but usually when it's hot here, it's hot most other places. In the winter when it's warm here, it's cold in other places.) I grilled an early dinner of salmon and potatoes, which my son and I shared -- in shorts and tank tops -- with the porch door open. It's lovely.

Still, it doesn't do much to put me in the holiday mood. I could put on some music, I suppose, and get out all the ornaments (we decided to get a tree and use only unbreakable decorations), and "Christmas up". I know the holiday season is a blue one for some people, and while I don't usually experience that, this year I've been thinking a lot about those who are gone. I'm sure it's fine to do that, but not at the expense of losing time with those who are here. I'm going to work on getting my focus back to that.

This afternoon and evening I'll finish calculating final grades, and maybe then I'll be more in the mood to move forward in the holiday spirit. Today is also the last day I have to take the steroid pills and antibiotics. I'm sure I'll feel better when those are gone. Oh, and when I was picking up some chairs at Home Depot today, I bought outdoor lights -- tiny multi-colored icicles -- to hang across the front of my house. Now that I think about it, maybe I'll hang them out back. A bit unorthodox, perhaps, but my living room is in the back of the house and we'd all get more enjoyment out of them that way. And I'm going to say that in the midst of warmth and palm trees, it's fine to decorate whatever way I want.
