I suppose for my analogy to work, I should say "a new batch of seedlings". My students tonight seemed so much more serious than I remember previous students being. They were attentive and polite, complied with all my requests, and were cooperative in every way. Granted, it was only the first night. But I'm optimistic.
The first class was terrific! I fell into my old schtick as if no time had passed. I think I put the students at ease by being light as I went through the class policies. Either that, or they think I'm a little crazy and they don't want to mess with me. I'm fine with that too. The first class is always a kind of dance; we're all getting our bearings and sizing each other up.
My "new batch" seems eager to learn. I'm eager to teach, so it should work out just right.
