Market Food

Okay, so I've really been slacking in the "homemaking" department! I just haven't had time to shop or cook, so most of my meals -- even before my granddaughter got here -- have been carry-out, dine-in, or store-prepared. The store-prepared meals have probably been the most healthy, but it's expensive to keep buying ready-made food, and it's something I don't usually do. Tonight was our big blow-out: steamed dumplings, sushi, potato chips, and gourmet cupcakes from The Fresh Market. I had to work and leave my granddaughter at home to her own devices. (I'm happy to report that she didn't hurt herself or burn the house down!) I may have felt a little guilty, so I got things I wouldn't normally -- like the potato chips and cupcakes.

Tomorrow it's back to fresh homemade food. I have chicken thawing in the fridge, along with asparagus and other veggies. Honestly, for a twelve-year-old, the girl has a pretty sophisticated palate. She was thrilled with the sushi. The dumplings and cupcakes were my idea, but she requested raspberries, peaches, and potato chips. No more of that! I'm probably not setting a good food example, but she is at Grammy's house. I can indulge us both a little. I'm sure tonight wasn't the last night we'll eat non-home-cooking, but we will at least cut back. On the other hand, we're meeting my middle son downtown for lunch on Friday at a restaurant with a candy shop attached. Oh, well. We'll try.
