Things You Wish Would Never Happen

I've probably mentioned before that I get local news alerts on my phone. It was funny when I was in Morocco and would get them if I was connected to a wireless network. What wasn't funny was the message I got yesterday morning: A kid was hit by a car and killed not far from my house. It's actually right next to the base where I'm teaching, where my first new class started last night. It turned out the kid was crossing the road to walk to school, along with four other kids and an adult. The details are fuzzy even a day later, and it's hard to understand how a child (he was twelve) who was walking with five other people could have been hit by a car. Certainly as a group they must have stood out. The police have not charged the driver, but the article I read today seemed to imply they might. Whatever the cause, whoever was at fault, it was a horrible tragedy.

When I went to work last night, I saw a small group of people setting up a memorial of balloons, signs, and stuffed animals. They may have been family or community members, I'm not sure. They seemed oblivious to the news trucks surrounding them as they mourned the little guy. I spent some time sorting out how I felt about the news crews being there, especially as people set up a memorial. I suppose if it brings attention to what has long been considered a dangerous intersection, it's good that they're there. The light turned red as I approached, so I sat there for a few minutes considering it all, trying not to look over. It just seemed intrusive.
