Too Much Food Network

As my son and I are enjoying a quiet day at home, we somehow ended up watching episode after episode of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Normally, on the day after Thanksgiving, I wouldn't want to even look at food, but since (for me at least) it was a "leaner" Turkey Day, I was fully engaged in all the unique foods the host uncovered. I don't love that guy the way I do my "sweet, sweet Anthony Bourdain" (as my granddaughter calls him), but he's okay. Earlier this afternoon we went out for a few food items (which turned into a huge fiasco that I don't feel like reliving here -- basically, Earth Fare increasingly has its shit together less and less -- I'll leave it at that). We got some steamed shrimp, a little stuffing, and a bar of dark chocolate with ginger.

Inspired, I suppose, by the interesting food combinations of the show, my son made a shrimp, stuffing, and cheese sandwich. He asked if I wanted one, but I really didn't. He seemed to enjoy it. I tend to be fairly creative in the kitchen and my boys are too, but what didn't appeal to me about that sandwich was the idea of putting bread (in the form of stuffing) between more bread. I like carbs at least as much as the next person, but I'm not a big bread eater. Here's a weird little fact: bread and other dry kinds of foods give me hiccups. Crackers, pretzels, toast, all of it. That doesn't mean I never eat any of those foods, just that I have to have a serious craving to make it worth the risk of hiccuping for the rest of the day.

We're going to play a board game soon, and if we leave the TV on we'll change the channel. The food commercials are hunger-inducing enough. We don't need to watch hour after hour of food porn.
