Here Comes Your 19th Nervous Breakdown

Or maybe it's the 91st. It's hard to say. Besides, it's not called "having a nervous breakdown" anymore. It's "decompensating". And I'm not really doing either, but the city has allowed one of the cable providers (not sure which one) to put in new cable. This means a lot of digging, jackhammering, and general noise and mess. Added to the hurricane debris still lining our streets, it's also a driving hazard, as the cable trucks and spools are just out in the road. Today is the first day the digging has been in my yard, and I hope it will be the last.

My neighborhood is usually quiet and beautifully maintained. I don't know why the city hasn't picked up the tree limbs and broken fence panels -- the storm happened a full month ago! Yesterday morning as I stood on my porch, I saw a rat run across the bottom panel of my side fence. In all the time I've lived here, that's the first rat I've seen. (Of course, I have seen rats before, just not where I live.) It's hard not to think it's related to all the garbage and fruit/foliage lying at the curbs. I'll admit that it freaked me out a bit.

After this long week, all I wanted to do was come home and sit on my porch, taking in the peace and quiet. In addition to the digging noises, the Blue Angels are practicing for tomorrow's airshow, which I usually enjoy because I can watch them from my back yard. Today, though, it's cloudy. All it is is more noise. In two minutes, I have a conference call. When that's over, I'll probably turn on the television and crank up the volume. At least I'll have some control over what I listen to!
