While I Can

I don't usually post so early, but every state and local emergency management agency has virtually guaranteed that we will lose power later today until . . . who knows? The track has moved even farther west, so just south of us the hurricane will kiss the coast -- probably as a Category 4 storm. My friend who has been helping me with my kitchen reconstruction is coming over later to ride it out. She lives at the beach and at first had a tough-girl attitude; now she's coming to her senses. Of all the people I could have with me during a hurricane, she is the best I can think of. We work well together, so when we can, we'll do more reno stuff. When we can't, we'll do some kind of crafts. We do sometimes get on each other's nerves, but at least we can say so and go to our separate corners for a while.

In addition to getting house stuff done, we're certain to be well-prepared. At 8:30 a.m. as I write this, the wind is already picking up, and the worst won't be here until tomorrow. No power may not seem like a big deal, but at nearly 100% humidity the air inside will be stifling if we can't run the AC. With 150 mph winds, and the accompanying rain, of course opening the windows isn't an option. I'm cooking while I can, then cooling down the house as much as possible. I have two coolers; my friend is bringing one (full of food). We have loads of water. It should be okay. One last word: If I hear one more person ask how police intend to enforce the evacuation orders, I'm going to lose my shit! Once the bridges close, there's no hope for changing your mind or getting help. Leave or don't, but realize you're stuck with your decision. Wishing safety to all my coastal friends!
