The Next Day

Okay, you know I don't like to post from my phone, but that's my current option. Internet and cable have been out since last night. I'm not complaining. My power never went out for more than a minute or two. More importantly, I am fine. My friend went back home as soon as the evacuation order was lifted (noon today) to assess damage at her place. She lives about five blocks from the beach, and we had heard there was major flooding and other damage, but she too was happy to find that it wasn't as bad as she expected.

One of the places I teach has already canceled Monday classes and will make a decision tomorrow about Tuesday. The other college (which is where my Monday and Wednesday classes meet) hasn't decided yet, as far as I know. That's the only reason I wish Comcast would get on with: I have no way other than Internet to stay in touch with my students. Getting news is also a bit more difficult.

Mostly today is, for me, a day of intense gratitude. Having seen over the years what awful damage hurricanes can inflict, I am so glad to have had a few scary days and be able to move on with my life. I know it isn't that easy for everyone who gets slapped with a storm. My fence is down and my yard is torn up a bit, but my house held strong to protect itself, me, and my friend. Oh, and also the little dog and cat although they are confused by the new landscape (where the fence is down). All I want to do is sleep! I guess knowing everything will be okay after days of not knowing that is such a huge relief that now my mind and body just want to turn off. I hope that if you were in the storm's path, you fared as well as we did.
