The Cone of Uncertainty

At first I thought I might have used this title before, but then I realized that we haven't had a "vivid" hurricane season since I started writing the blog. I suppose all places have their "cones of uncertainty". Ours just happens to relate to hurricanes. When I lived up north, it was for blizzards (and occasionally rain events). For those who live in California, it's earthquakes. (Those are, perhaps, uncertain more for timing than for location.) I love where I live, so I have learned which events to pay attention to and which will not likely be a problem. The other issue -- the "uncertainty" -- is that the storm track can change drastically in a short period of time. As of tonight, with Matthew just having been upgraded to a Category 4 storm, we (and all of Coastal Florida) fall within the cone of uncertainty, with the worst of the weather (however bad that may be) predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.

As with blizzards when I lived up north, there's no way to change the weather. Honestly, despite loving Florida life, if it weren't so darned cold in the D. C. area, I'd move back in a heartbeat. I miss my family and friends back home. So the trade-off for being close to them would be tolerating the cold weather; the trade-offs for being here are not seeing those I miss -- and sometimes having to prepare for hurricanes. I don't want to jinx it, but in the nearly-seventeen years I've lived here, I've never had to evacuate my home for a storm. (Now that I think of it, I wonder why we never tried to outrun the blizzards, driving south at the first sign.) So for now, I'll stay stocked up on groceries, and hope for the best. Not just for us here in Florida, but for everybody.
