Mermaids

My little granddaughters (one of them is not so little anymore!) rarely ask me for specific handmade items, but when they were here a few months ago, they requested mermaid blankets. I don't think they necessarily want them to match, but they will be similar. I had the suggestion in the back of my mind, but today when I opened an email, there was a pattern for an adorable mermaid afghan staring back at me. Now, of course, I have to make two (despite my not having finished everyone's Christmas sweaters from last year). Here's the problem: no, it's not time, although that may be an issue too; it's that, even with the ridiculous amount of yarn I have, I don't have any "super-chunky", which is what the pattern uses. And it uses a lot! I usually don't enjoy working with large yarn. I prefer the delicate detail of size 3 and 4 (aka "sport" and "worsted"), and sometimes the tricky 1 (sock) or 2 (fingering, I think). I haven't done much with lace, but you get my point. I don't like to work with thick, heavy yarn.

I donated a good bit of yarn over the past year, and now I think I'll try to sell some on eBay. It's probably a good time, with the holidays quickly approaching. Whether I sell it or give it away, I will not bring any more yarn in until I get rid of some. Let me say that again: I will not bring any more yarn in until I get rid of some. I should say it twenty more times, but I'll spare you that and keep repeating it in my head. I will find a way to grant my granddaughters' request. I'm happy that they don't ask for everything they see, and even happier they want to have something I made with my own hands.
