Okay, I'm not going to come right out and say that bingeing on Lemon Creme Oreo Thins cured my migraine, but it seems like a huge coincidence that a few hours after I did so, the headache was finally gone. I hardly ever bring processed food into my home; if I decide I really "need" it, I at least have to burn the calories and take the time to go out and get it. As a result, my meals and snacks usually consist of good whole foods. But this morning, headache or not, I had to emerge from my house to pick up a few groceries. If I had been out anything (everything) but coffee, I wouldn't have gone, but I used the last of my coffee today and knew I absolutely had to be prepared for tomorrow morning. I had a short list, which I mostly stuck to, until the Oreos jumped right off the shelf and into my basket. Even as I opened the package, I asked myself why I commit such sabotage on my good-eating efforts.
I had a Balance bar for breakfast and a turkey and cheese with spinach sandwich on whole-grain bread for lunch -- followed by at least a dozen lemon Oreos (and a bit of self-loathing). I stretched out on the sofa and fell asleep for about an hour; when I awoke, my headache was gone. Eating cookies is certainly more enjoyable and, in the long run, probably more healthy than taking medicine . . . and the results were certainly better. I would be willing to entertain the idea that the nap and a day and a half of taking my prescription migraine pills might have contributed in some small way to my recovery, but I'm giving most of the credit to the Oreos.
