A Room with a View

. . . if your idea of a view happens to be the local middle school and a road. Actually, it's not too bad. The hotel near my house -- whose desk agent told me on the phone yesterday there were no rooms available tonight -- magically opened up on Expedia, at $68.00 per night, in fact, much better than the $92.00 the agent had quoted last week. I didn't bother to ask when I checked in why Expedia had rooms available when the hotel said there weren't any. This way worked out a lot better. Even though my homeowners' insurance will reimburse me for my living-away expenses, I want to have as little outlay as possible.

This hotel is about three years old, and already it's beat to hell, which is a shame. It has nice features but hasn't been well-maintained. The toilet paper holder is broken, and the freezer in the mini-fridge has so much frost I could barely fit in my slim cold-packs. Wall are chipped and nicked, room numbers are missing, and I'm sure there are other problems I haven't noticed yet. On the other hand, it's literally three minutes from my house, has a beautiful pool I intend to try out in a few minutes, is mostly clean, and has fluffy-soft beds. I'm really trying to see this escape as an adventure rather than a forced home-leaving.

If I look through the window at a different angle, I can see trees lining a pond, and because my room faces west I'll be able to watch a beautiful sunset (if I'm not at the pool then). I'm happy enough for the moment just sitting here from my hidden perch, watching the cars pass by and the joggers run by. My neighborhood is quiet, and I don't usually see much going on. Maybe this will be an interesting change of pace for a few days. Whether it is or isn't, the mold will have been scrubbed away when I go home. That's nice.
