I've always thought that everyone should be treated like a king or queen on his or her birthday. I never considered it too much for myself, but for friends and family (and especially my sons), I try to make sure the day is super-special. My youngest son is in Winter Park finishing a school project, and my oldest son and granddaughters are leaving on a pre-dawn flight tomorrow (my birthday), so the oldest two and the middle one's girlfriend came over and made a big deal of my special day. I wasn't expecting a gift since they made dinner and got a beautiful cake from the Italian bakery, but in addition to the nice meal they made me, I also got a trimmer for my yard, which my oldest son is using right now to neaten up my yard. (It may seem like an odd gift, but I had just said a few days ago that I was going to weed around the edges of the porch and in the corners of my yard. It's actually perfect.)
Despite my feeling sick (much better today than yesterday) and having to shorten my morning class by almost half, I've had a wonderful day. It will be hard to send off my departing sweeties tomorrow, but we've had a great visit and packed a lot into a week. After I drop them at the airport, I'll come back and (maybe) try to get a little more sleep, and then spend the rest of the day doing whatever I like. I have a little grading to do for my Monday class; otherwise, the day is mine to spend as I please. Since my son is trimming the yard tonight, I might like to buy some flowers and/or foliage to brighten up my yard. Maybe I'll get to that and maybe I won't. Either way, I'll relax and do something that makes me feel good. While I'm grateful to my sons for celebrating me, it doesn't hurt for me to spend a little time celebrating myself.
