The Futility of Facebook

Every day when I do my morning stroll through the statuses of my friends and family, I am perplexed by the posts that seem to be attempting to persuade others to change their minds on political and/or social issues. I pause occasionally to comment but often think better of it. What is the point? Of coure I believe everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and has the right to express it. But as far as I can tell, one of two outcomes will occur: People who already agree will continue to agree, and people who disagree will continue to disagree. Some will state their agreement or disagreement, or pick apart the issue, or both. Others will "like" the posts and possibly subsequent comments. Yet others will do what I do: roll on by. I'm happy to express my opinions -- in person and in civilized discussion. But I fail to see how anyone expects to change anyone's mind on Facebook.

On the other hand, I really do enjoy my semi-stalker status on social media. I like to see pictures of and comments about what folks are doing, even if I don't post or comment much myself. My kids seem to share my opinion on this. If they post, it's usually something crazy or a picture of their pets (which I know some people find annoying). I have thought about deleting Facebook, but whatever bad there is about it (or, more precisely, about people's activities on it) there is a lot of good in connecting those of us who can't be together in person. I'll hang around, but I won't make or comment on political posts. It's only going to get worse as we head into an election year. I'm rolling my eyes already.
