Well, maybe I'm not quite ready, but I'm one step closer. Literally. I can wear a shoe! Yesterday was the first time in seven weeks I put a sneaker on each foot and walked around. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but I'm ecstatic. When I think about where I was in my recovery even a week ago, I'm blown away by where I am now. I won't be taking any leisurely walks or running marathons any time soon, or maybe ever, but at least I can get around without that Frankenstein boot. I still need the boot some of the time; I'll bet by this time next week I don't need it at all. Today I took the big step of sending back the knee-scooter. Good riddance!
I can't wait to really be able to "turn up", to get out and about. (I know this term because I overhear my students saying it.) I'm aware that my return to (or surpassing of) my normal activities will be gradual. My plan is to slowly work my way up to SUP, stand-up paddling. For some reason that intrigues me. I'm guessing that's months away, so in the meantime I'm going to write a list of what I want to do and then arrange it by level of difficulty. Checking off each of those things -- and the first ones will be pretty tame -- will fuel my enthusiasm to reach the next one. Onward with the journey!
