Gunman on the Loose

When I bought my house, this was a nice part of town. I think it's still one of the best places to live, but a few things are telling me that now is a good time to get away for a while -- which is good since I'm leaving tomorrow for several weeks. (It's not a vacation; I'm trying to get my mother's house on the market.) As if yesterday's neighbor situation regarding the car hadn't been bad enough, earlier today three people were shot just around the corner and the shooter remains at large. One victim died at the scene and the other two were in surgery the last I heard. Early this afternoon, homicide detectives held a press conference, with very little information. (My oldest son, who still lives in the DC area, was surprised there was a news conference. I told him we don't get a lot of crime out here.) Of course, none of the news stations have updated information about whether there is an identification for the gunman or whether he has been caught.

Not much scares me, but today I was afraid to leave the house. My son who lives in Jacksonville sent me a single word text about that: "Don't!" I did have things to do but they weren't worth the risk of encountering the shooter; the news conference was held in the shopping center where I was planning to go. Tomorrow morning I will assume that the gunman has either been caught or made his way far from the neighborhood. I'll go out and do what I need to do -- and then leave town.
