Gotta Have It!

One of the reasons I don't watch many television programs is that they require commitment. At this stage in my life, I prefer the "hit it and quit it" variety of programming -- true crime and other shows that necessitate no real relationship. I can view them whenever the mood hits me, and if I miss an episode I haven't lost out on valuable information that will keep me from enjoying the next. When I was laid up after shoulder surgery several years ago, a friend lent me the first few seasons of Mad Men and I flew right through them. Several months later (during a boycott of cable service and while Blockbuster was still open) I got caught up. For whatever reason, I lost interest for a while. Earlier this week I started on Season 5 and have done virtually nothing but watch back-to-back episodes for the past three days. (I'm about to watch Season 7: Episode 5.) Truly this isn't all I've done this week. I have been keeping Netflix on all day but pausing often to clean, cook, launder, and conference call. But I am having a very hard time turning off the television.

My son is on his way here to spend the weekend, and he wants to go to the beach tomorrow. On Saturday we're going to a local street festival where one of my other sons is playing along with his band. As much as I'm looking forward to spending time with both of my sons, these activities also mean I will have to tear myself away from Don Draper and crew. I'm almost at the point where I can start watching the current (and final) season. I would never take time away from my kids to watch TV, but I can't guarantee I won't be thinking about it.
