My youngest son is leaving tomorrow after staying with me since Friday night. We were trying to find something to do; the weather kept bouncing back and forth, to and from beach weather, so we decided against getting our stuff together and heading there. But we were both restless, and even though we had a Redbox movie, neither of us felt like watching it. We kept walking around the house, the porch and the yard. I asked if he wanted to play Scrabble. He was up for that, but we couldn't find it. (I think I let my middle son and his girlfriend borrow it.) The only board game we could find was Yahtzee, and we were on the fence with that one.
He noticed the badminton racquets (maybe there's another name for those, but neither he nor I can remember it) and we had two new birdies. It was a pretty day (despite the in-and-out clouds) so we took the equipment out back and started batting the birdie around. We thought we were pretty good, so we put together a makeshift net (from an extension cord), drew our sidelines, and got down to business. I won the first game -- not by much, but I haven't exercised in ages so I felt triumphant! He asked for two out of three. I needed a rest first. We had great fun, laughing at ourselves. I did a few weird slides where I made the point and was lucky not to hurt myself. We weren't as good as we thought we were, but we were having a good time.
He won the last two games but not by much. I enjoyed this especially because when my son was young, we spent a lot of time playing outdoor games in the yard. Over the weekend I committed to getting at least a little exercise every day. Yesterday I took a walk on the beach after brunch. I think I'm off to a good start.
