Okay, so it's not exactly the Rolling Stone, but my son's band is on the front page of our local newspaper today. The band is playing a total of four gigs, the last being tomorrow night, at a big downtown event called OneSpark. I have paper delivery Friday through Sunday, so when my son's girlfriend texted me early this morning to tell me the band was on the front page, I went out and grabbed it and took a picture of the picture. (I'd love to contact the photographer and get a better copy. I could have it matted and framed for the band garage. And probably one for my "beach room" too.) My other kids wanted copies, so I said I'd get some after work. Walgreens had only one left; I grabbed it and went to 7-11, where I was able to snag their three remaining copies. I told the clerk why I was getting all the copies. I swear, she was so happy and cognizant of my mama pride that she teared up. I thought we both might start crying and hugging while the twenty customers behind me awaited their turn.
This is a big deal for the band. These guys started up about four years ago in Tallahassee. They're all from this area, so after school they regrouped and in the past year have really taken off. It just turned out that one of the other employees at the bistro where my son works is also in a band and has a recording label. He likes the band's music and has helped with promotion; he has contributed greatly to their success. They've all worked very hard -- the band boys, my son's girlfriend (who does all the band's design work), and the friend who is the promoted, along with many other supporters, local and not -- and I couldn't be happier for their accomplishment and recognition. In a few weeks they're taking off for a multi-city tour, and the publicity bump of having their photo on the front page of the paper couldn't have come at a better time. Maybe one day it really will be Rolling Stone.
