Now that I'm leaving the house a lot more -- between working and socializing I'm out almost as much as I'm in -- I have been wondering what my little dog thinks about my absence. She seems to be able to tell the difference in my being out for work and just being out. How do I know this? When I come home from work in the evenings, she has found paper to chew up, even though I always think I haven't left any out. She doesn't usually eat things, but she has a taste for mail, books, and letters. On occasion she has even managed to get up to my desk to indulge in a morsel.
If she understood the different reasons I leave the house, it seems she would be more inclined to chew up my paper items when I went out to shop or meet a friend for lunch. After all, those are more discretionary activities. Or maybe her playful nature sees those things as being more important to my wellbeing than work. Does she resent that I leave her in the evenings? Perhaps she doesn't think anything except, "Gosh, this paper is fun to chew!"
