Back in Class

When you find your calling, it's hard to escape -- even when you really try. Teaching is that for me, and I've missed it a lot over the past few years. I love it, I'm good at it, and it helps people. Yesterday I got a call from the Liberal Arts Dean at a local college, asking if I would be interested in teaching a class or two next semester. He wanted me to come in to meet with him -- today! After we set up a time to meet, he sent me an email asking that I bring my graduate and undergraduate transcripts. I don't have those sitting around! I printed out an unofficial copy of my graduate transcript and hoped that would suffice. It did! I'm taking on two classes next semester.

Best of all, other than using a department-chosen textbook, I have total autonomy over how I achieve the desired course outcomes. Lack of autonomy was a big part of why I left my last teaching position, so I couldn't be happier. With two classes, I'll still have time to do my other work and volunteer activities, and I'll nearly double my income. And if it ends up being less perfect than I think it will be, my commitment is for just one semester. But I think it will be pretty perfect.
