I'll try to contain my giddiness, but it won't be easy. I have so many fantastic things coming up, and when I got my mail today I had a summons for jury duty! Now, I know some people may see that as not-so-great news, but I am thrilled to pieces. I have thought several times over the years that it's odd I've lived here for so long and haven't been called. It isn't only that I'm interested in the legal system and how it works; I am excited to be able to be part of it. I was called once when I lived in West Virginia, but didn't get through the initial lottery. I was so disappointed! That time, I could have gotten out of it if I wanted to. I was about five months pregnant with my middle son. (By the way, that's still a valid excuse, and it's phrased in an old-fashioned way: "expectant mother-to-be".)
I mentioned a few days ago that I've voted in nearly every election since I turned eighteen. I see jury duty as a sort of extension of that responsibility, an opportunity to serve my community. I am thrilled to have the chance to do that and to learn in the process.
