A Refreshing Evening Rain

When the landscaping crew at my son's apartment started up right around the time I began my scoring shift, I wasn't thrilled, but when I went outside after I finished working, I saw that the grounds looked quite nice. I had thought about taking a dip in the pool but could see that a storm was brewing so I changed my mind. Now that the rain has come through, the air has cooled slightly and, especially combined with the grass-cutting from earlier in the day, smells so clean and fresh.

I've heard that smells trigger memories more than any other sense, and I believe it. While I love the scent of grass after rain, it isn't the same in Florida as it is in Maryland (where I grew up). I didn't think about this much until recently, but now I think about it all the time, the way the grass smelled just after being cut on a summer day. It makes me homesick, or probably to be more accurate, it makes me nostalgic. I guess the air up there still smells that way but I don't think that the smell is really what I'm missing.

In any event, there's something beautiful about the world after a good cleansing rain, a sparkly freshness.
