My son's apartment has a broken thermostat, and even while wearing my winter pajamas I have been sleeping under a blanket and still my nose and fingers are freezing if they happen to peek out. It seems very odd; his utilities are included in his rent, and he has reported the broken thermostat but management doesn't seem to care much. In the daytime while I'm visiting, we sit around in socks and sweaters and sweatshirts, which of course we peel off immediately upon going outside into the 100+ degree heat.
He says his neighbors are usually quiet, but today a gaggle of them decided to throw a party, and I discovered I like house music even less than I thought, although I did learn that stucco buildings have good acoustics. The pounding beats are bouncing off the walls like a hastily aimed dodgeball at a pasty bald head. (My son helped with that simile.) At some point in the near future, I think a few of my son's neighbors will ask him, "Who is that nasty woman who was staying at your place?" But, really, why wouldn't I pull the window blinds aside to stare at them when they were yelling over the music just outside the front door? They waved in apology; I smiled an exaggerated smile and waved back.
I love to visit my kids, and I've been lucky to have many chances to see all of them lately, separately and together. The one I'm with now is starting classes on Tuesday, and with his accellerated program. he won't have much time for visiting. I'm going home tomorrow, back to my hot house, and probably won't see him for a while. It is nice to know, though, that when I do want to visit, he's just a short trip away in Winter (Wonderland) Park.
