Fun with Texting

In general, I hate to text. My vision is good -- until I try to look at tiny writing. Because most of my texting is with my kids, I'm always worried that I'll send a completely inappropriate emoji. Sometimes I put on my glasses, but since I don't need them for much, they usually aren't handy. Tiny writing and potentially-inappropriate emojis are not my only objections to texting; for a brief message, it's fine. When it's a constant back and forth, just call already! The only exception is when one of my sons is bored at work and wants to text. If I'm not busy, I'll play along. Today's back-and-forth was with my middle son. Here's how it went:

Him: Is it okay if we bring Jean over tonight?

Me: I'll be out for a while but that's fine.

Him: Thanks! We have the new key.

Me: Ok. I might be here. Depends on when.

Him: K

Me (after a brief interval): You guys can go with me to North Beach Bistro if you want. I'll buy you a drink. I'm meeting [a friend].

Him: Oh man that sounds so great

Me: I'm just having one martini and maybe a snack.

Him: I'm 99% sure I have band practice tonight

         and I skipped last week.

Me: Okay, I might have two.

Him: I'll let you know soon.

I'm wearing myself out a bit.

I hope I'm fresh by Saturday.

Me: I'm sure! [Note that there is a lag time so it doesn't seem like I'm always being directly responsive.]

Him (a few hours later): No practice tonight

Me: Yay! Martinis all around!

Him: In honor of Chris Cornell [microphone and skull-and-crossbones emojis]

Me: And Roger Ailes [bacon, pile of shit, and skull-and-crossbones emojis]

Him: #duality

Me: #twobirdswithonestone

And that was that. Boring maybe but less boring than the rest of my day and perhaps even mildly amusing. My phone is always full because I never delete texts from my kids. Some days, when I'm not at my sunniest, reading back through them makes me very happy.
