where would you go? I don't mean forever -- just for a visit. Sometimes people ask me, because I live in Florida, where we go for vacation. I can't answer for other Floridians, but here's what I usually do: If I have time for just a short trip, I go somewhere else in Florida. We have so many beautiful beaches and parks, and many are not far away. If I have more time, I go someplace that has mountains! I love living near the ocean, but I really miss the mountains. Florida is so darned flat. Usually that place is where my son lives. He isn't in the mountains, but he's a short distance away from the area where we used to live -- on a mountain -- and even from the main roads the scenery is beautiful. Rolling hills and high mountains are easier to love now that I don't (usually) have to navigate my way out in the sleet and/or snow.
Often the place I like to go is Santa Fe, but I'm trying hard to broaden my horizons. Someday, if I play my cards right, I'll have a second home in Santa Fe. That's far in the future. It's good to have a goal. Still, that doesn't mean I never want to go anywhere else. My other favorite places to visit are "new beaches", tropical places I haven't been to before. Hawaii and Cabo were amazing, but I'm not in a hurry to go back to either. I want to go somewhere new. I've also been to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and probably other places that aren't coming immediately to mind. One place on my bucket list (to the extent that I have one) is the Dry Tortugas. That destination interests me not only for its natural beauty but also for its rich history. (If you don't know about it, look it up! It's fascinating.)
I don't have any immediate vacation plans, and I'm not even really looking. I am considering going back to Santa Fe in May. I've been there in every season but spring so it's partly about "completing the cycle." I have some time off coming up, and I think I need to fill in some of the blanks with travel. Now I just need to decide where to go.
