As soon as I got home from work, I turned on The Weather Channel. According to my phone's news alerts, our governor was about to hold a news conference on storm preparation. I couldn't find that one -- I switched around channels a bit looking for coverage of the Florida news update -- but I saw one for South Carolina; all coastal areas are being evacuated by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. That's a little nerve-wracking, especially when I don't know what's going in Florida. The South Carolina governor said everyone within a hundred miles of the coast is being evacuated. I live three miles from the coast, and I will likely (at least as of now) have to go to work tomorrow. The college where I teach on Mondays and Wednesdays is close to my house, so it might be five miles from the coast at most. We have moved from the cone of uncertainty to the cone of concern. I'm not sure how many "levels of cones" there are, but this is one of the biggest deals I've seen since I moved to Florida nearly seventeen years ago. We had some big storms in 2004 and 2005, but it's been pretty calm since then.
My inclination is to curl up and hunker down until it's over. I'm set with coffee and chocolate, and truly -- as long as my windows don't blow in -- I think I'll be fine. Do you have any idea how hard I'll cry if my new floors are ruined in the storm?! Oh, well. Floors can be fixed (again). Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I think I'll pack a bag just in case. Then I'll just have to grab my little cat and dog, and we'll be on the road. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. Stay safe, all my coastal friends!
