Better Safe than Sorry

A tropical storm is bearing down on Florida, but you probably know that. We are under a state of emergency. I mostly stay prepared for any situation; my favorite "preparation tool" is my coffeemaker that operates by car battery. I actually got it for camping -- and that's also great -- but there have been a few times when my power was off early in the morning and I used it to make coffee. I suppose it's a bit odd to sit in my car in the driveway making coffee, but when it comes to my a.m. caffeine fix, I don't care how odd I look.

So my "better safe than sorry" is meant in a way sort of opposite to what you might be thinking. The university where I just started teaching yesterday is on the river, so if there is flooding, school will likely be canceled. Because of when the storm is supposed to hit here, I'm very concerned about being able to get back home safely. (My classes there are later in the day than those at the other college where I teach.) I would say there's a good chance classes will be canceled tomorrow, but I'm still doing my planning and prep. That's where the safe over sorry comes in.

If I'm overexplaning, I apologize. My hip hurts so bad that I broke down and took both a pain pill and a muscle relaxant, both of which I avoid as much as possible. Maybe this isn't the best condition in which to attempt to write, but I'm planning on attempting to take a little nap. If I sleep straight through to morning, I don't care. For now, I'm expecting to head to work around ten in the morning. However, if it turns out I don't need to go, I won't be extremely disappointed. I can lie down and heal my hip all day.
