And I Thought My Drive Was Bad!

My ex-husband, oldest son, and granddaughters left from the DC area around 7:00 last night. My older granddaughter got sick along the way and they had to stop repeatedly so she could vomit. In the middle of the night, somewhere in South Carolina (I think) my son heard a scraping noise. He pulled over to check it out; the muffler was dragging. On the shoulder of I-95, he and his dad rigged it back up with a speaker cord. It worked well, and everything was going along fine until they heard a horrible screeching noise and a loud snap. Some important belt had broken. By this time, it was just after dawn and they were stuck in Darien, Georgia. They limped off the exit and pulled into a Ford dealership -- and waited for it to open.

At this point, I called my son and heard all of this for the first time. He knew there was no way they would make it for his brother's graduation. His voice was full of frustration. As I was talking to him, his dad came back and said that the dealer had said it would be a week before the work would be done, but they did say there was a shop down the road that might be able to help. Several hours later, the gang was back on the road. By 2:00, they had finally arrived in Winter Park. We pushed our meal reservation to 3:00. It didn't work out great for them, and I know they were disappointed, but my youngest son was very philosophical about it. At least we were all able to enjoy a nice celebratory meal. I actually cried like a baby after my son graduated, which surprised both him and me!

Now I'm having girls' night with my granddaughter. We're just sitting around chatting and watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives of all weird things. It's been a long few days for everyone. Tomorrow we will wake up, have breakfast in the lobby, and enjoy a swim. After that, it's back to Jacksonville for a few days. I'm hoping we all have easier road times ahead.
