I'll start out by saying that Mazie is fine. I wouldn't want you to worry! Last night, as I chatted with my son on the phone, I suddenly heard a horrible ruckus. There are few things worse than hearing a big, loud dog going crazy -- while at the same time hearing your own little dog crying and realizing she's not in the yard. Somehow, even as I stood on the porch and should have been keeping a closer eye on her, she had shimmied under the new fence into the neighbors yard. The new fence is higher, which is nice at the top but not as nice at the bottom. Because the ground isn't even along that side of the yard, there are gaps in a few places between the bottom of the fence and the yard. While I wasn't looking, she had gotten through one of them; when the big dog came after her, she was doing her damnedest to get back though. I hung up, of course, when I first heard her crying, but I felt so helpless. She did get back through and we were both freaked out.
I saw something wet on her haunch and thought she was bleeding, but when I cleaned her up it seemed to just be oil or something (other than blood). She was shaking, and I'm pretty sure I was too. For a while, she kept licking at her side. I didn't see anything and today she is fine. This morning, although I haven't been feeling so hot (unpleasant side effects of my new BP medication), I found some old "fake pickets" -- I'm not sure what these are really called, but they're like little fences for garden areas -- and put them where the gaps are. I haven't been letting her run in and out at her leisure, as I usually do when the weather is pleasant, and that's kind of a pain for both of us. She likes to stay outside and sit in the sunshine. I do too, but I have other things to do and don't feel comfortable leaving her out there alone.
Maybe she'll learn from her adventure. Maybe not. She is smart, but she's also a curious little dog.
