Since finishing Marie Kondo's book last week, I've had today set as my "launch day". I wanted to choose a day when I wouldn't have to go anywhere or have many distractions. The former was easy; my car was towed off to be repaired this morning, and I'm not even checking into getting a rental until I hear from the shop. The latter, avoiding distractions, was made more difficult by both my car troubles and my attempts to find one single piece of paper I need for my taxes. If you saw how many pieces of paper I have in my house -- most, but not all, filed by category -- you'd understand just what a Herculean task that is. I didn't find it. But, hey, that's part of why I'm decluttering and organizing, right? I'll find what I need. Today is only Day 1.
The first step in the great tidying-up is to go through clothing, starting with tops. I'll probably find more later, but I actually counted them. I had ninety-nine, of which I saved forty-four. (Keep in mind that this counts every kind of top from tanks to tees to blouses to cardigans.) Forty-four still sounds like a lot. Of those I didn't keep, I set aside sixteen for consignment and bagged up thirty-nine to donate. One was a raggedy shred of a shirt that I wore a lot when I worked in my yard. It was barely held together, so that one went in the trash. My biggest challenge is going to be staying out of the bags until I get my car back and can get them out of here. Maybe I'll put them in the garage. Out of sight, out of mind.
I feel good about getting this done, especially because I found some tops I really like that I'd forgotten I'd had, and also I'm happy that someone else will have the chance to enjoy the clothes I no longer do. It's too early in the process to really see a difference in my room or closet yet, but on my next day off I'll tackle Category 2 -- which, as you may have guessed, is bottoms.
