If someone were to look in, that person would think we were the perfect family. Mom and Dad, three grown sons, one son's girlfriend, and two little girls. While we're a happy bunch, having a lot of fun playing board games and listening to Christmas music (with the Wizards game muted on TV), it's been a long road -- and far from perfect. To an onlooker, it may not appear that Mom and Dad have been divorced for nearly eighteen years. We've always been civil to each other, but in the past year or so we've been downright pleasant. We've achieved a level of comfort around each other that I think neither of us would have thought possible in the years immediately following our divorce.
This is nice for everyone but especially for my sons. They don't have to choose whom to spend time with. We're all having our Christmas together (even if it's not on Christmas). It's pretty good -- even if it's not perfect. Then again, what is?
