Your Money or Your Life

Maybe I'm just overly cautious, and I wasn't planning on taking a cruise today anyway, but as I watched the local news tonight and saw a Carnival cruisehip departing the Port of Jacksonville -- heading for the Bahamas -- I couldn't help but think that those passengers are crazy! Hurricane Joaquin is slamming the Bahamas (as a Category 4) and heading northeast; there's no way you'd get me on a cruiseship in the midst of that. Is the cost of a cruise really worth the risk of death or injury? Not to me.

A local travel agent was interviewed, and his comment was, "It's completely safe. The cruise companies aren't going to risk their valuable equipment." How very compassionate! He said nothing about risk to people, other than to say that, even if passengers have trip insurance, their fear of potential damage/danger from weather isn't a legitimate reason not to show up to the cruise. I am not a wealthy woman, and I've never taken a cruise -- although I've heard they're wonderful -- but I place the value of my life above the material value of any thing. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, I wish safety and good luck to the people who live in the Bahamas, people who are traveling there (especially by sea), and to my many friends and family who are -- this time, instead of us in Florida -- on track to be in the path of the storm.
