Something Strange in the Air

When I left for my class early this morning, the air was so thick I felt like I could swim through it. And just in case I had wanted to but couldn't, plenty of rain fell as I drove in; I was covered either way -- through air or on the ground. Our downtown area -- which I drive through to get to my campus -- has a tendency to flood quickly. It rained hard on my way to class. My classroom is pretty well-soundproofed, so I don't know if it rained for the three and a half four-plus hours I was there. (I stayed to lead a study group after class.) When I came out, it seemed a bit less humid and there was no rain, but I knew more was to come. The forecasters may not always be right, but when the chance of rain for the entire day is 100%, we can count on it. I was glad to get home "sans monsoon". About forty-five minutes later, the skies broke loose again.

I had been up since 4:30 this morning -- crazy, I know, but I wanted lots of time to wake up and get ready for class -- and my allergies were off the chart. I took some medicine and decided to lie down; that was around 4:30 p.m. I fell asleep and slept hard; between the gray weather, allergies, and too little sleep I was gone. I may have slept longer, but around 6:30 Mazie was past ready to go outside and she was letting me know. I stepped onto my porch and noticed something odd. What was this feeling? It was a cool breeze! How long has it been since I felt a cool breeze? I can't even remember. Lows tonight are supposed to be in the high sixties -- a nice cold front -- and highs tomorrow only in the upper seventies to maybe eighty.

I like hot weather, but I also like a break from it every now and then. September can be pretty hot in Florida, so a few cool days is a real treat. (This is forecast to last for at least the next several days.) I have no doubt there's more hot weather in store for us, but tonight I'm going to sit on my porch and enjoy the chill. And, yes, sixty-some degrees overnight is chilly here.
