Since I've had some extra time (and I have Netflix), I decided to watch a show from its first season through its last. The show I chose was The West Wing. I'm nearly through Season 1. It was hard to choose a show; obviously there are many to pick from. What led me to this one was another program I watched, a series about the decades on the National Geographic channel. One of the episodes featured a clip from The West Wing, and it looked interesting. Also, it was narrated by Rob Lowe, for whom I never had any strong feelings one way or the other, but his role in the show seemed well-played.
So far I'm enjoying it. I had never seen even a single episode -- as is the case with most shows from the eighties and nineties. I was busy raising kids and going to school, and going out having fun when I wasn't busy with those things, and television didn't interest me much. Now I feel that it interests me more than it should. Of course, there are many more entertainment choices, on TV and elsewhere, these days, but that doesn't mean it's better. One thing that's nice now that wasn't available then is the ability to watch virtually anything whenever it strikes your fancy. I remember that back in those days, if you missed an episode of your favorite show, the only option was to wait until after new programming ended and catch it in reruns.
While I'm not sure that television viewing is the best use of my time, it's easy and I'm glad to have choices. I'm making a grilled cheese sandwich to go along with my TV watching, which probably also isn't the best choice, but it is easy -- and it's on multigrain bread with real cheese (as opposed to that plastic American cheese crap) and is lightly buttered -- and semi-nutritious. That's the best I'm going to do tonight.
