The Green, Green Grass of Home

Over the past few years, my front yard has gone to heck. At first I had a small brown patch in the middle; now -- despite my best efforts -- the yard is mostly brown patch, ringed by a little green grass. I had never seen this kind of grass until I moved to Florida. It's called St. Augustine, and you can't grow it from seed. It spreads by "runners". Resodding requires plugs rather than regular square blocks of grass. It's a pain. My best guess is that I have an insect infestation, and I've treated for that (among other things). I keep getting "nasty-grams" from my HOA telling me to fix it or risk being charged $100 per day. Seriously, grass should not be so hard to fix.

Since I can't afford $100 per day charge -- and because I'm tired of having the ugliest yard on my street -- I finally bit the bullet and called a lawn maintenance service. I don't mind spending money on essential things, but I'm not loving the idea of spending money on grass! I decided to go with a local company rather than one of the conglomerates whose flyers litter my doorstep on a regular basis, and the rep is coming on Monday. Even though I'm not looking forward to the expenditure, I am somewhat relieved to be handing it off to an expert -- and to having the HOA leave me alone (although they'll probably find something else to bitch about).
