The Never-ending HVAC Issue

Last week I had my handyman install a brand new air system. He got a good deal on a new unit, but the total price for the system and installation wasn't cheap. (And I won't even get into all the money I spent trying to keep the old one limping along for the past four or so years.) It worked great when he tested it. But it was chilly last week and I didn't need to run it. In fact, it was so cold on Sunday morning, I tried to turn on the heat. It didn't work. I won't try to explain why I wasn't all that concerned. It has to do with intake and output things I don't entirely understand myself. Today, though, as the temperature rose and the sun poured in the back windows, I decided it was time for some cool air. So I flipped the thermostat on. And nothing happened.

I wasn't feeling so great all day -- I stayed home from work, something I almost never do -- and all I wanted was some cool air hitting my hot face. It wasn't happening. I called my contractor, and he was here within two hours. It turned out a fuse had blown. He was able to fix it (it's running now) but said there might be a problem in the wiring between the internal and external units. If that's the case, we need to run all new wiring through the attic. The old wires are under the foundation of the house. (And by "we" I mean "he".)

I've probably spent more on heating and air than on any other single problem with my house, including replacing the old roof with one with a lifetime warranty. I really hope the blown fuse was a fluke and that the replacement will hold up well. If I have to sink any more money into heat/air conditioning, the next thing to be blown will be my budget.
