Until my spring break mini-vacation, I had been doing very well with healthy eating. I'd made significant changes to my eating, in terms of both habits (no more eating late in the evening) and nutrition (adding many fruits and vegetables). I was using a diet plan on Sparkpeople, where I chose a meal plan that was low in calories and tracked my protein, carb, fat, and fiber consumption. For over a month I stuck to it, almost to the letter (the meal plan allows trade-offs for similar foods), but when I went to visit my son, everything went out the window. There is something about traveling that makes me go off the rails foodwise, even when I'm not far from home.
The day I got to my son's house, we went to a steakhouse with a wood-fired grill. The next day we went to a tiki-bar restaurant on the beach for lunch, that night we ate Thai food, and yesterday we had lunch at a Turkish restaurant. I admire people who can order a salad when they find themselves dining in a restaurant. I make good choices overall -- no dessert, nothing fried (other than fish at the tiki restaurant), fresh vegetables -- but I wouldn't have eaten as much if I'd cooked for myself.
Today I feel like I've been detoxing from prepared food, back on my meal plan and cutting out snacks and restaurant food. Balsamic chicken, jasmine rice, and asparagus are cooking on my stove and I am so hungry! Tomorrow I'm going to a show opening at an art gallery, and of course there will be wine and snacks. My son's girlfriend is going with me. I'm going to ask her to help me control myself. I was losing two pounds per week on average before spring break. I'm hoping to keep up that pattern, but it won't happen if I keep going out.
