I have a conference call at 6:00, and I hate to waste time waiting, so I thought I'd knock out a blogpost until it's time to call in. In yesterday's list of things going on, I forgot to mention that my volunteer activities are also heating up. Tonight's call is for my coaching association; we will likely disband our chapter due to lack of interest. It's a shame. The chapter has been around for a long time but no one is willing to step up and take a leadership role. I've been on the board for four years, two as the community outreach liaison and two as president, and even before that our numbers were dropping off. In early December, the board sent out an email to our current and former members, expressing the urgency of the situation. I got one response -- from someone who wasn't really willing to join the board but suggested we urge the parent organization (a global group) to establish a state chapter.
I'm all about community service and volunteering, but I think I've done/am doing my share. If people want the groups that they care about to survive, they need to devote some time and effort to making it happen. Sadly, no one has done that for this group, and tomorrow it will go away.
