Happy Birthday to My Middle Son!

If you don't know my middle son, you won't understand why this is the perfect card for him. Inside, it says, "You never cease to amaze!" He is outrageous, adorable, and a total smart ass. If I didn't love him so much, I'd sometimes find him annoying. Actually, despite my love for him, I do sometimes find him annoying. Of all my kids, he is the one most like me in personality and temperament, something he doesn't always like for me to point out, probably because he knows it's true. I have wondered if he is bipolar; I wonder that about myself too. But ultimately I think that we are both "rollercoaster people", enjoying the ups and downs of life more than the even keel.

He is the most gregarious of my three boys, with the youngest being the least and the oldest being in-between. He is endearing and amusing, as well as awesomely musically talented. My other sons are too, but he above the others is working hard towards parlaying that into a lucrative career. His band is playing next month at a bigger venue than they ever have before, starting off a show in which the headliner is a regionally (if not nationally) known Talking Heads cover band. He is inching closer to fulfilling his dream.

Tonight I am taking him and his girlfriend out to a Thai restaurant that he chose. When I called to make the reservation and the hostess told me the restaurant does a free lava cake for birthday boys (and girls too, I assume), I asked her to make a big deal of it. He enjoys a big deal. He has no idea (I think) that I've made this request, which will make it even better. When he was two, we took him out for his birthday at Chi-Chi's. The server came over and put a huge sombrero on his little two-year-old head and all the other servers gathered with her to do a loud, clapping version of Happy Birthday. The entire time, he said with his eyes wide, looking like he couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry. He's much more fearless now; I'm pretty sure he'll laugh.
