Social Forays

Over the duration of this blog, I have made occasional efforts to improve my social life. None has really stuck. Now I am more inspired. I don't want to sit at home thinking about what I might do at some point in my life; I want to do it. Today I met with a man who is the immediate past president of the board of which I'm now president. He had reached out and asked if I would like to reconnect, and I said sure. As it turns out, his company may have some work for me, specifically writing and editing, but maybe some training too. All of that just came up in conversation, proving that it really is who you know that counts. He asked me to send him my resume.

After that meeting, I had a hair appointment. My stylist was one of the people urging me to go on a cruise, and I told her why I didn't think that was going to pan out. (A single person has to pay fully double, which I think is unfair.) So she said she thought I needed to plan a nice different type of vacation for myself. I like to let my mind wander while my color processes, so by the time I left the salon, I had talked myself into going to Costa Rica. I'm not sure I'll actually do it, but I did stop at the library on the way home and check out some travel guides.

When I got back to my house, I thought it would be nice to go to European Street, a little bistro not far from where I live. I decided to call a friend I hadn't been in touch with for a few years to see if she would like to join me after work. Oddly enough, she was already there, and said, "Come on down!" We spent several hours catching up, and it was good for both of us. When I wondered aloud what she was doing sitting in the cafe in the middle of a Thursday, she said she had been fired from her job of ten years back in March, and had been having a hard time finding another one. Having some time to laugh and forget about our problems was good for both of us.

Now that I've gotten the ball rolling, I'm hoping to keep up the momentum. In my ideal life, I'd work out every morning (or at least most), work a few days a week at home and a few days in an office or classroom, and meet up with friends once or twice a week. I would travel to some exotic locale a few times a year and visit with family even more frequently. I would keep up with all my volunteer commitments (I'm good on this one, no need to add anything). It doesn't sound like it should be that hard. I'm making it my new mission, a little piece at a time.
