Movies and Life

As I sit home on a Saturday night watching The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, while my middle son and his girlfriend are at a Steampunk wedding and my youngest son and his girlfriend are at a Jack White concert, I can't help but see some parallels between my life and the movie. I read the book long ago and, when I was a child, watched the TV show loosely based on the novel, My World and Welcome to It. (Actually, I just looked that up, and the show was based on the life and writings of the same author, James Thurber, which I already knew, but on a different book, a collection of short stories sharing a title with the TV show. It ran only one season, 1969-70, so it's curious that I remember it.)

While my fantasy life is rich -- filled with exotic vacations, romance, and adventure -- my actual life is lacking in all of the above. Tomorrow my two youngest sons and their girlfriends will be here all day -- the youngest pair will be taking me out for an early birthday dinner since they can't be here next weekend -- so that will be a full day. Beyond that, maybe the movie will give me some insights for incorporating real vacations, romance, and adventure into my life. I should pay attention.
