A Few Thought on a Variety of Topics

On my first day of no scoring in nearly a week, I have made a conscious effort to stay away from the computer. I have noticed recently that my eyes are taking a real beating. They take longer to refocus as I move from close work to farther work, and I'm not sure how long I can keep reading essays, or writing and editing, for that matter. I guess there's always the option of enlarging the type. I do have reading glasses, but my eyes aren't so bad that I need them for anything except seeing very small print, and having them on otherwise makes me a little nauseous. Oh, well. Anyway, I'm glad to have a day away from scoring essays and a lighter schedule coming up.

I went into the bank where I have my mortgage to have my modification documents notarized, and after I had taken care of that, the bank lady asked if there was anything else I needed, perhaps a new credit card. I told her I had paid off my credit cards and preferred not to have one. She then told me that airlines and car rental companies don't take debit cards, which I believe is not true unless this is a new policy. I have traveled a great deal and have never had my debit card refused. What it likelier is that she doesn't know what she's talking about and didn't want to admit it. That drives me crazy. It's okay to say you don't know something, or even that you may have misspoken rather than to keep talking when you know you're wrong or don't know you're right.

Our local libraries have taken a huge hit budgetwise. All of them are now closed on Mondays, they have staggered hours (so that there is at least one open at certain times in general areas), and one has been slated to close soon. Today I went into the library and, as I was checking out my books, made a small contribution to help save the remaining libraries. The branch closest to my house is always packed, and I hate to think of losing it or any of the other branches. I got my first library card before I started school; my sons did too, and I pretty sure my granddaughter did as well. In a state that doesn't have a lot of money, especially if it's run by conservatives who don't necessarily place a lot of value on education or public services, it's not a big surprise that our libraries are in danger of closing.

My Chinese food purchase has turned out to be a wise investment. I had plenty for dinner last night and tonight, and still have enough left over for lunch tomorrow. And I have just over fourteen hours left of computer-free bliss, so I'm going to take advantage of that.
