Old News

Because I hadn't watched any news since before I left for my up-north trip -- nearly a month ago -- I thought I would turn on the local news tonight and catch up on national and community events. Here's what I discovered: Not only is it mostly bad, it's pretty much the same as always. The names change, along with some of the specifics, but otherwise the stories are the same as last month -- and probably the same as last year. Kids left alone in cars, old ladies beaten up (one whose house was burned down), hit-and-run accidents, and thunderstorms. Oh, and the big news of the day? On the eve of Jaguars training camp, one of the players was arrested just as he was becoming eligible to apply for reinstatement. (I don't know what his original infraction was. I care so little about the Jaguars I couldn't even express the depth of my non-caring.)

My brief foray into the news world -- Oh, good lord. Are you kidding me? A commercial just aired touting Rick Scott as an advocate of education! I need to stop convulsing with laughter before I can continue -- reminded me of what I already knew. I can't change anything big. Getting upset about global events, or even local events, is a big waste of time. I can do what I can do, even if it's relatively small, through my volunteer work. It isn't much, but it might make a difference for a few people. It makes a difference for me.
